Tuesday’s Tip: Photo Transfers & Altered Blanks

Have you ever transferred photos onto metal? What photo transfer medium do you enjoy using? Our favorite is manufactured by Ranger – Claudine Hellmuth’s Studio Multi-Medium – it’s a wonderful product that achieves great results every time! It’s available in Matte and Gloss finishes – is an art quality gel medium used for gluing, image transfers, sealing art, creating glazes and extending Claudine Hellmuth Studio Paints or other paints. What more can you ask for! Below is a Vintaj 3 x 4 Altered Blank Canvas using this medium to transfer an old photo. Linda Cain had a laser print made from Kinko’s and applied Claudine’s Matte Medium. After the image was successfully transferred, the Crop-A-Dile was used to punch holes and set eyelets in the corners.

You can also get similar results by printing a black & white photo onto Grafix Rub-onz Transfer Film. Cut out and rub-on the image to a Vintaj Altered Blank or Bezel. Apply alcohol ink over the image for a distressed look. Apply glossy accents or ice resin to seal. Use these techniques to create a gorgeous necklace featuring your family photos, as Jeanne did here below. You can also create a beautiful charm bracelet or locket with photos.

Beautiful! I’ve never done an image transfer before. Did you copy an image onti Sticky Back Canvas or just plain paper?

Also, I only have an ink jet printer. Is it best to use lazer printers or will ink jets work too?

    Thanks for sharing!

  2. The top image was copied onto plain paper, or you can print from an ink jet in order to transfer the image onto the altered blank canvas. You can also transfer images the same way, from paper onto sticky back canvas – I’ll save those project ideas for a future post :)

I have done a lot of transfers and Claudine’s is the BEST. I also like Golden Gel Medium.

I’ve tried Liquitex gel medium and is the worst for photo transfers.

The transfers here done by Jeanne and Linda are stunning.

Hi, I just love the idea and have ordered some graf fix to make some photos to transfer to my Vintaj blanks. Hope the order comes soon. I will be trying to make a necklace like yours , since I love doing genealogy.

    Wish me luck.

Has anyone worked with Sherri Haab’s transfer process? Just wondering how it differs? I picked up her kit at Bead & Button, but haven’t tried it yet. Thanks for any feedback! :)

    Hi Everyone!
I used a laser print from Kinko’s and Claudine’s Matte Multi Medium. She says to use a laser print. These are so cool to work with!!!!

Thanks Jess!!! Sorry I missed you today. Saw Mom though…BUSY like crazy today!!!!

I’ve been meaning to buy some of that rub-on film for my printer since I first saw it mentioned here: seems like the perfect way for making transfers as I used to love rub-ons as a kid and this makes it possible for mee to create personal rub-ons.

Perhaps use some of the many pics I’ve saved from the Dover Sampler — which, BTW, I recommend to anyone interested in (digital) illustrations and pics for art or crafts.

Like the idea of using the computer as part of my crafting/jewellery-making.

  15. omg omg omg this is suuuuuch a cute idea. its perfect too because i’m in a photography class so this wouldn’t be hard for me to try to do. thank you for the wonderful idea. its super cute.
