Technique Video ~ Textured Impressions: Antique Silver Frame

Vintaj paper crafting with Sizzix 6″x6″ Textured Impressions Embossing Folders is a fun way to create beautiful cards, mixed media, altered art & unique home decor projects. Not only are these embossing folders covered with gorgeous patterns inspired by Art Nouveau, Art Deco & Nature elements, with an all over pattern, they were also designed to create a tiled look and cover large surfaces. When embossing Arte Foil or card stock, you can match up the patterns to make a continuous piece. Another fun way to use the folders is mixing & matching different patterns to create a collage or quilted effect.

This project uses two styles brought together to create a decorative Antique Silver Frame…

Watch and see how easy it is to use Arte Foil, Embossing Folders & Patina in this technique video to create this Antique Silver Frame {that’s my little Livi last June when she turned 1}.

You can also create an Antique Copper Frame using the same dies and onyx patina with the Copper Arte Foil.

Frame features our Leaf Rosette in the corners & Moroccan Fresco design along the edges.

Patina on Unexpected Surfaces: Change the Color of Beads!

A beautiful mix of natural brass, artisan pewter, patina, glass, crystal & hand-dyed silk give this design the perfect amount of dimension & texture with stunning Winter style.

{Frosted Forest necklace ~ Click photo for product links & beads from Bello Modo}

Customize beads with patina! You can brush patina onto many surfaces other than metal. Stipple or dry brush patina onto beads to simply change the color or to create a cool effect…

Betsy did just that by applying a combination of Amethyst, Aged Bronze & Nouveau Silver Patina to the back of the 5x16mm Crystal MA Dagger Beads, seen strung above.

Mix a new color with Patinas to deepen the bottom edges of natural brass Oak Fronds & center of Primrose Petals with Amethyst + Aged Bronze.

Lightly brush either Nouveau Silver or Marble Patina along the top of natural brass Primrose Petals, Oak Fronds & to 11.3mm Large Flat Oval Chain to give your design a frosted look.

We don’t string beads too often, but it’s always a fun addition to our designs when we have just the right beads. Miyuki Tila Beads have two holes so you can get creative with your pattern when stringing. Betsy strung a tiny teardrop above each dagger bead spacing them with the Tila beads. This creates the look of one unique beaded strand using two pieces of wire.

Make the Most of Your Winter Jewelry Designs!

Just because it’s Winter, one of our coldest & snowiest to date in most of the US, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t work flowers into your jewelry designs. Do it, it’s a great way to channel the outdoors in hopes of warmer weather! To give your designs that Winter feel all you have to do is pair them with cool tones, frosted beads, crystal colored glass along with Artisan Pewter & the rich color of Natural Brass. Lucite is the perfect way to incorporate flowers & petals into this design season, they already have that frosted look and did you know that you can patina them to add additional frost to the tips, or change the color entirely!

Here are some of the beads that from Bello Modo we got to play with…

Luctie flowers are one of my favorites, so I instantly gravitated to them! The gorgeous aqua petals looked lovely with the sparkling Pave Crystal drops & clusters of leaves.
Earrings came to mind…

A little marble patina on filigree leaf charms give them a crisp Winter look.
Simply brush on, wipe off & relief!

Czech glass Trumpet Flower shaped beads & Crystal AB teardrops mixed with Artisan Pewter & Natural Brass as perfect for a Wintery look! I love the beautiful opaque & vitrail finish on the flower beads, they not only give them a vintage look but also a hazy frosted-over effect reflecting the season. I took both small & larger flower shaped beads to make drops & bead links in this mixed metals bracelet…

{Woodland Winter bracelet ~ click here for Vintaj & Bello Modo product / patina links}

Simply age Artisan Pewter by applying earth patina into the crevices of an acorn & pine cone. Make sure you have a paper towel handy to wipe it immediately to remove from raised areas to achieve this effect. Cluster these aged Artisan Pewter charms, flower drops, Natural Brass “forest friends” charms & some dainty antique silver leaf chain from the bottom of a Scrolled Ironwork filigree for a unique focal.

Have you ever patina’d bead caps? For this frosted finish, I brushed on, wiped & reliefed marble patina onto our Foliage & Love Birds bead caps. Here’s a helpful tip for apply patina to these tiny bead caps… Place a 2 inch head pin into the opening of bead cap to keep it from moving while brushing patina on. It will also keep your fingers patina-free, for the most part.

What type of Winter jewelry projects have you made?
Do you have a go to bead, color combination or style?

I really enjoyed designing for this theme. It took me out of my comfort zone, using a softer & more pale palette than I’m used to. I’m going to speak for myself, however I’m sure a lot of you feel the same way, but as far as the weather we have been experiencing I’m READY FOR SPRING!!!!!

Artisan Pewter + Natural Brass + Patina + Facets + Lucite = Winter Jewels

Betsy & I had so much fun designing for our “Frosted Forest” theme!
Bello Modo is our Online Bead Partner, and Pamela sent us such gorgeous Lucite, crystal, glass, silks, fibers & more to get creative with. And, with the snowy Winter we have had, it was the perfect inspiration for us!

I was inspired to use a mix of our Artisan Pewter & Natural Brass together for our designs. The combination worked so well together, especially with a little patina to add that frosted look…

I created a frosted effect on this beautiful Artisan Pewter Framed Scrollwork with a mix of Moss & Marble patina. Simply blend the two colors together, apply patina to the surface and use a paper towel to wipe away from raised areas while patina is still wet. It will give you a pretty hints of green over the detailed silver design!

I love this as is, but knew I wanted to add layers & dimension…

So, next I brushed on some Marble patina to the surface of our NEW Natural Brass Hibiscus Leaf and immediately wiped it away to only reveal it in the vanes of the leaf. I also gently highlighted it with the white side of our Metal Reliefing Block to bring out the detail.

Suspending the Hibiscus Leaf from the Framed Scrollwork was the start of my design, now I just needed to build from there…

I haven’t designed with any of our NEW jeweled pendants yet, so I thought one would look stunning layered over the leaf. I decided on our Somewhere In Time pendant, with all these facets of color!

{click here & scroll to the bottom of page to view all the jeweled pendant styles}

To add even more dimension and bring in some icy & frosted petals to my design, I added a beautiful Triple Stacked Rose Lucite petals & a Crystal AB Glass Teardrop from Bello Modo to bring it all together!

With all the detail in the layered pendant, I simply hung it from a textured jump ring & chain to complete the design.
